The Volkswagen Golf R has gained early recognition, not only for its improvements over the previous R32. While some people are disappointed that the Volkswagen Scirocco Coupe will not be available in the United States, the Golf R is proving to be a viable alternative.

The Hyundai Veloster is another popular new model in 2012 small car. It is considered to be a top pick in terms of balancing a fun to drive car, distinctive styling, and solid fuel economy at a price under $20,000.

Top Compacts That Feature Major Revisions

There have been a number of redesigns for the 2012 year, however the largest changes come from to industry leaders. The 2012 Ford Focus may be one of the most improved vehicles in the last decade. Ford has never been known for producing quality small cars, however the new Ford Focus features standout styling, sharp interior, and a more refined ride.

The Honda Civic remains one of the most dominant vehicles in its class. As the competition continues to heat up in the compact car segment, the Civic underwent a redesign to try to maintain its industry leading position. While it’s traditional dominance may be threatened, the improved fuel economy, more spacious interior, and well-known durability still make the Civic one of the best in its class.

2012 Compact Cars With the Best Cargo Room

The Chevrolet Cruze is considered to be one of the most spacious compact cars on the market. It not only features more passenger room, but also has more cargo space due to its 60/40 folding rear seats.

Another compact car that cannot be left out of the conversation is the Subaru Impreza. It is almost as close to a mid-size vehicle as you can get in the compact car class. In fact, during a recent demonstration, the five-door model proved it could store an entire 200 square foot apartments-worth of IKEA furniture. The model has nearly the capacity of some compact SUV models.

Top Fuel Economy Models

When looking at the fuel economy of compact cars of 2012, there are a large number that are fairly similar. Nearly ever model gets combined fuel economy over 30mpg and several compact models such as the Chevry Cruze and Ford Focus offer “eco” versions that get over 40 mpg highway.

The Subaru Impreza also features a much more fuel-efficient engine and gets EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27-mpg city and 36-mpg highway with all-wheel drive. Of course, the top compact model in terms of fuel economy is the hybrid Toyota Prius, which is considered a compact despite its spacious interior.

Budget Friendly Models

If you are looking to find the most budget friendly 2012 small cars, then the Volkswagen Jetta and Hyundai Elantra should be on your radar. The Jetta has taken some lumps for downgrading its interior to lower its price but it still presents a decent option for under $16,000. The Elantra provides the most features for its price point starting at a price under $16,000. Whichever model you choose, be sure it is among the safest small cars of 2012.
